Nova Primary Academy Brings Deaf Young Voices to Life Through ‘Big-D Stories’ Literacy Event

Nova Primary Academy in Peterborough hosted a vibrant and heartwarming celebration of deaf culture and literacy welcoming 16 Deaf pupils from five schools across Peterborough.
The event, titled ‘Big-D Stories’, was part of a creative literacy initiative in collaboration with the theatre company D-Live!
The full-day workshop brought together students aged eight to 16 years old and it provided a unique opportunity to explore storytelling through British Sign Language (BSL), illustrations, drama, and creative writing.
This immersive experience was delivered with full BSL accessibility, supported by CSWs and interpreters, and culminated in students performing their own creations in front of their peers.
The event aimed not just to foster literacy, but to celebrate identity and build community. One touching moment came during a group game, when the students suddenly realised that they all shared a Deaf identity prompting spontaneous joy and inclusion.
Mrs Worrall, event organiser and resident teacher of the Deaf at Nova said: “This was more than just a workshop, it was a chance for deaf children to come together, share experiences, and see their creativity celebrated. The confidence and pride we saw by the end of the day was truly inspiring.
“Seeing our children and those from other schools growing more confident as the day went on, playing together at lunchtime and then performing their own creations in the afternoon was beautiful.”
She added: “One of the many highlights was watching two boys, who had never met other Deaf boys before, compare their glittery ear moulds, a simple but powerful moment of connection.”
Throughout the day, the students collaborated to develop illustrated stories in BSL, which were later translated into English. These stories will contribute to a new book being developed by Steve and Christopher from D-Live, who were on site to support and collect the children’s work.
Each child left the event with a personal copy of the book they helped create a meaningful keepsake of their contributions.
D-Live! (https://www.d-live.org.uk/) continues to champion creative expression for deaf children and young people, and Nova Primary Academy was proud to host an event that embodied inclusion, creativity, and empowerment.
