Reindeers Bring Festive Magic to Longthorpe Primary Academy

Pupils at Longthorpe Primary Academy were treated to a truly magical experience as real reindeers paid a festive visit to the school grounds.

The special event was made possible by the school’s newly launched Treetop Fund, a charity initiative led by both staff and pupils to create memorable experiences beyond the classroom. The visit marked the fund’s first major project, setting the tone for many exciting initiatives to come.

Children had the rare opportunity to meet, feed and learn about the reindeers, which were provided by Woodbine Farm in Peterborough. For many pupils, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that brought Christmas magic to life while offering valuable learning opportunities.

The Treetop Fund was created to support projects that fall outside the school’s core budget, empowering pupils and staff to turn creative ideas into reality. Planned initiatives include extra-curricular activities, hardship support and projects that enhance community wellbeing.

Mrs Kate Trethewy, Headteacher at Longthorpe Primary Academy said: “The Treetop Fund is all about giving our children experiences they may not otherwise have the chance to enjoy. Seeing the excitement and wonder on their faces as they met the reindeers was incredibly special. This visit perfectly reflects our commitment to enriching school life and creating lasting memories for our pupils.”

With antlers up close and festive cheer in abundance, the reindeer visit perfectly captured the fund’s mission transforming ordinary school days into unforgettable moments and fostering pride, joy and togetherness across the school community.

Pupils were keen to share their excitement following the visit, Olivia, Year 1, said: “I really liked them – they were so fluffy. I learned that they eat moss and that they are white so they can hide in the snow from animals that might eat them.”

Harper, Year 1, added: “Santa’s reindeer were so fluffy and cute. They were really friendly and they let me stroke them.” Older pupils also valued the experience, with Reuben, Year 6, saying: “It was really good to see the reindeer and it was a great experience that we might not get again.”

Arwa, Year 6, agreed: “It was a great opportunity to see the reindeer because you don’t normally get to see a reindeer.”

As the Treetop Fund continues to grow, Longthorpe Primary Academy hopes to build on this festive success, creating many more moments that inspire, delight and bring the school community together.
