Bestselling Author Angie Thomas Inspires Students at Jack Hunt Academy
Students at Jack Hunt Academy were recently given an unforgettable opportunity when the Academy welcomed number one bestselling author Angie Thomas to the library for a special event celebrating reading, creativity and storytelling.
The visit, organised with the support of the National Literacy Trust, brought literature vividly to life as students gathered for an engaging Q&A session with the acclaimed author of the epic contemporary fantasy trilogy Nic Blake and the Remarkables.
During her talk, Angie Thomas shared insights into her journey as a writer, reflecting on her upbringing in the United States, the books that inspired her as a young reader and the path that led her to becoming a globally recognised author.
Students were particularly fascinated to hear how she created the imaginative world of Nic Blake, and how her personal experiences and passions continue to shape her storytelling.
The session also gave Jack Hunt students the opportunity to ask their own questions, sparking thoughtful discussion around creativity, perseverance, and the importance of finding one’s voice through writing. Events like this not only generate excitement around reading but also demonstrate to students that their own stories and ideas matter.
Mr Jon Hebblethwaite, Head Teacher of Jack Hunt Academy said: “We would like to extend a huge thank you to the National Literacy Trust for helping to organise such an inspiring event. Their work continues to make a meaningful difference in encouraging a love of reading among young people.”
Becky Marrs, Manager for the National Literacy Trust in Peterborough said: “Our research shows that the steepest declines in children and young people’s reading engagement occur during early adolescence.
In 2025, 46.9% of children aged 8 to 11 enjoyed reading, compared with 29.5% of those aged 11 to 14.
But there is hope, when children and young people have access to books about topics that interest them and have the opportunity to meet amazing authors like Angie Thomas, it can have a positive impact on their relationship with reading. This benefits so many areas of their lives, from boosting their confidence and wellbeing to improving their academic performance and future outcomes. We hope this event will inspire more students to Go All In on their passions through reading and discover the lifelong benefits that reading can bring.”
Mr Hebblethwaite said: “At Jack Hunt Academy, we are proud to provide opportunities that enrich students’ learning beyond the classroom. Angie Thomas’s visit was not only memorable but also a powerful reminder of how stories can inspire, connect, and empower young people to explore their own potential.”
